A day full of tests

On Friday night Evan had stomach pains so bad I took him to the ER.  I had posted about the straw he found and we thought he may have picked something up from it.  The next morning he woke up and was fine.  The stomach pains returned last night and I was able to get him to sleep comfortably about 20 minutes later.  I figured that would be the end of it and he’d wake up in the morning feeling fine and we’d just continue on with our daily routine.  I found him crying in the bathroom at 6 am complaining about stomach pains once again.  When he has gotten them he’s crying, sobbing, clutching his lower abdomen and saying he just wants to sleep.  He also breaks out in a cold sweat, breathes very shallow and when I pick him up his heart is racing like something scared him.  I waited until his pediatrician opened and took him in.  From there we’ve been at the hospital for several tests.  They want to rule out a bowel obstruction or appendix issues.  So today we took him for blood work, an abdominal X-ray and an abdominal ultrasound.  We were told after the X-ray and Ultrasound to wait to see if we needed more tests, but our pediatrician said we could return home to wait for the results of the blood work.  The radiologist came in during his ultrasound and said his appendix looks good.  I’m hoping that Evan just has some sort of stomach/intestinal virus and it’s nothing serious.  If you could keep him in mind and hope for good test results we’d appreciate it.  He’s running a low grade fever today so hopefully that means it’s just viral.  We should know more as soon as blood work results start to come in.

  1. I am so sorry for your little one, and for you too! It’s so hard when children are sick. Of course you would do anything to make them well. Positive thoughts coming your way for a very speedy recovery, and more sleep tonight for all of you!!

  3. For what it’s worth… our son had some stomach issues awhile back. It was always at night. We didn’t end up going through tests, but it ends up he was reacting to dairy products. As long as we kept him off diary completely, he was fine, but if he had any dairy products he’d get sick at night. His dr. said the intestine lining can get irritated after you’ve had some types of illness. Now he can eat dairy again, but it’s one of the first things I stop him from eating if his stomach is bothering him.
